The Batak live in the north of Sumatra, in a vast region around Toba Lake. This lake is thought to be where the Batak originated from; it was long protected from foreign incursions by the native populations. Early travellers even went so far as to doubt its existence, and only in the mid-19 th century did the first Europeans get to its shore at last.
The lake is called after the populations living on its southern and eastern shores and on the Samosir peninsula. The cradle of the Batak people is believed to be Mount Pusuk Buhit, “the mountain at the centre of the world”.
